Godspeed to Our Champ - by Charley Smith

I am sad to report the loss of a very dear friend and Treasurer of the Board of Directors, William E. Buckingham, who passed away on June 10, 2007. Bill was a champion for people with disabilities for over 20 years. He was a trusted advisor and respected colleague to me as well as the rest of the Community Services Foundation Board of Directors.

Bill was a strong advocate for people with disabilities. As the Treasurer, he served on the Board of Directors for Community Services Foundation since its inception in 1989. He was on the Board of Directors for Southwest Community Services, Inc. from 1987 to 2004. Additionally, he was the Treasurer for the local Post Polio Support Group. Bill also worked tirelessly in his local community. He held positions as the former Worth Park District Commissioner, a former member of the Worth Days Committee, and the Treasurer of Care of the Earth, an environmental group, in the village of Worth. Bill was instrumental in aiding the group’s fight against a local dump site.

When Bill wasn’t busy with his volunteer commitments, he enjoyed driving and collecting Cadillac automobiles. He was a member of the Cadillac LaSalle Club and owned 15 rare and collectible Cadillacs. Bill and his son have rented many of the Cadillacs to movie production studios. He also enjoyed collecting model cars and had one of the largest collections in the United States.

Bill will be remembered by the many people whose lives he touched. He was married for 40 years to Mary Ann. Their son, William Jr. and his wife, Colleen, had Bill’s first grandson, Ryan William, on June 23, 2007.

I would like to personally thank everyone who made donations in memory of William Buckingham. Community Services Foundation will use the contributions to continue championing for people with disabilities.
